Soongies' Great Adventure
Our last day in Mombasa (and in Africa) consisted of packing, trying to change our remaining NAD 110 at various bureau de changes (but failing – no one wants Namibian Dollars), seeing the Tusks of Mombasa and eating Chinese food (again)! It also involved eating our last 40 cent fresh mango and drinking our last $2.20 mango shake It's the 47th day of travelling since we left Australia. By the end of today, we will have taken 10 flights; been to 4 countries; eaten lots of beans, lentils and chapatis; taken various forms of transport including aeroplanes, buses, matatus, tuk tuks and ferries; had a million mangos; and seen some incredible wildlife. Including lions, leopards, elephants and African hunting dogs. We’ve met some incredible people along the way – the Mandimas in Namibia, Alice and the amazing volunteers in Kenya, and the crazy crew on our Intrepid tour of Tanzania. On reflection of our first continent: Kate’s most exciting event: Seeing the first elephant in the wild! Even though the first sighting was quite far in the distance, my heart was racing to be in the wild with an elephant! Kate’s most insightful experience: Listening to Alice’s speech to the parents on Safisha’s final day of school – it was so powerful to hear someone talk who knows so much about these kids’ home lives and is such an advocate for them. I didn’t realise I would cry but I did! Kate’s most craziest moment: Camping in Serengeti National Park and Ngorogoro crater amongst the wildlife. Not just the usual camping in Australia where there is wildlife around! Camping in the middle of a massive african wildlife hotspot with no fences where we were told there is a good chance that lions will sleep right next to the tent or an elephant will probably waltz through the site throughout the night. Who knows what actually came into our site as we were too busy sleeping but hyenas were definitely close by (we could hear them) and a buffalo came to be about 20 metres from our tent (that we saw anyway - it could have come closer thought the night). Calvin’s most exciting event: Getting off the plane in Cape Town and the realisation hitting that he is going travelling for a year! Calvin’s most insightful experience: Working alongside volunteers at Safisha Africa school in Nairobi, Kenya with some of the most amazing kids who have so little yet have so much hope. Calvin’s most craziest moment: Potentially almost being stomped on and crushed in our car by a bull elephant in Etosha National Park, Namibia. So off to Dubai on Kenya Airways from Mombasa to Nairobi and then on to Dubai. The leg from Mombasa to Nairobi was uneventful. The leg from Nairobi to Dubai was. It started off with a slight delay of about 1 hour - but, as is typical in Africa, no one really announces anything until they realise the plane is due to leave and everyone is still waiting to board! Then about 2 hours into the flight, when most people are sleeping (except Calvin, because he's too busy watching Suicide Squad), a Chinese female passenger started having a heated argument with a Chinese male passenger in Mandarin a few rows behind us. Kate thought they were having a domestic. Then the female passenger started yelling, "HELP HELP ME! I NEED HELP!" She was holding a bag with one hand and holding the man by his blazer, while he was trying to keep his blazer close. By this time, everyone had woken up, including Kate, who thought her life was about to end - her first thought was "It's a bomb!" Thankfully, it wasn't a bomb. The passengers near the fighting passengers were trying to help and asking the lady what was going on - the lady accused the man of getting her bag from the overhead compartment, reaching in and stealing USD 2000 and putting it in his jacket! The staff took a while to arrive and tried to sort it out by talking to them at the back of the plane. They also announced on the PA for everyone to check their belongings as there has been a theft on board! When the plane touched down in Dubai, the security were there to question the people involved. As Calvin was getting off the plane, he was pulled aside too! Until his wife came along and saved him. Checked in to Dubai Comfort Inn.
