Soongies' Great Adventure
After a nice night spent with the jazz festival blaring next door, we enjoyed (another) buffet breakfast. If we keep up the buffet breakfasts, we might need to buy 2 seats on a plane each! We drove out to Windhoek International Airport in our Corolla quite early. We didn't know if the process of returning a hire car would be as long and arduous as it was when we picked it up. Calvin was a little worried about the 2 new scratches on the side of the car which we acquired whilst 4WD over some rocks - we thought Toyota might appreciate us testing how capable Corollas are offroad. But didn't need to even worry - the Hertz man didn't even bother checking the vehicle over when we gave it back! Checked in and waited to board. While waiting, Kate was very interested in the arriving plane - there was a potential celebrity on board as a black car with tinted windows was waiting on the tarmac. We never found out who it was although we hoped it was Charlize Theron. In any case we were a bit delayed with our flight and so we had to run a little bit in Johannesburg where we were connecting with our next flight to get to Nairobi. Turns out that flight was also a bit delayed too so we did some FaceTiming with free airport WiFi. In the end we got to Nairobi - took ages to get through customs because of the lines - but then we got to the bags... When Kate got to her bag, one of the buckles was open, her lock was gone and the zips were slightly open! Apparently, it happens all the time on flights through Johannesburg although it could've happened in Windhoek too... Thankfully, nothing was stolen except for the lock and the carabiner on the outside. It was 10 pm by the time we got out of the airport - our pick up from the volunteering organisation wasn't there, but then after a few minutes, Kate saw a sign that said "Katie & Friend". Calvin spoke to the man, Samson, and confirmed it was our pick up. On the drive to our host house in Kikuyu, on the Southern Bypass, we came across 3 cars stopped in the middle of the road. This was almost midnight. One car was being pushed on the side of the road by 2 people. A man, who got out of one of the other cars, told us he thought the people pushing the car were robbing the car. He started walking towards the car and shouting at the people pushing, demanding they come forwards with their hands up. We stopped for a little bit to watch, Samson got out of the car briefly to help but then decided we didn't need to be there and we kept driving... Ironically, Samson was telling how safe everything was in Nairobi only 2 minutes ago. We got to Mama Sophie's house, moved into our room and got ready for bed - only there was this kitten that was infatuated with Kate and tried to get in bed with her. The feeling wasn't mutual though so the cat got the boot.
