Soongies' Great Adventure
We had an early start so we could get out of Nairobi before the traffic got too hectic. We were on our way to get the hotel breakfast when we realised we had been locked inside our room! There were 2 locks on the front door and one of them was a bit dodgy so somehow we ended up locked in! We had to call the front desk to get someone to help us escape! We set off in the Intrepid truck at about 7:30 with the additional 2 people – Roxy, a Brit (originally from Trinidad and Tobago) and Bec, an Australian. So altogether, we had 10 people - Roxy, Bec, Andrew, Alex, Glenn, Bev, Carlo, Amanda, Kate and Calvin. On board was also the tour leader, Flo, a cook, Cyrus, and Dan, the driver. We stopped at the Rift Valley lookout to take some photos and even spotted a chameleon. Apparently the rift valley is one of the key landmarks that astronauts can see from outer space! Not long after that stop we could smell burnt rubber so we had to pull over so Dan could loosen the tyre a bit. We stopped and had a nice picnic for lunch at about 1:30 (Kate was pretty starving by then). When we got back in the truck, one of the guys tried to open the bus window and it smashed into tiny pieces so currently the truck is minus one window! Today we drove through 4 tribes/regions - Kikuyu, Maasai, Kalenjin and Kisii. We drove through the lovely city called Kisii – 75% of the population here is Seventh-Day Adventist. The Kisii people are specialists in agriculture and soapstone carving. We stopped at the supermarket to load up on snacks – and load up we did! Eventually, at about 5:30pm, we arrived at our accommodation – Itibo Resort – in Kisii, owned by Seventh-Day Adventists. Our only night of luxury before we camp the rest of the time. We walked around the nice gardens and accommodation for a little it before dinner eaten around a bonfire. Cyrus had cooked butternut and ginger soup for entree followed by spaghetti bolognese. Kate didn't realise there was a main course so she had 2 bowls of soup before having her spaghetti! To clean up, we washed the bowls and then we have to dry the cutlery and plates and bowls by flapping them in the air - express air drying!
