Soongies' Great Adventure
This morning, Susan and Jamal left to go on to their other travels. It was also Alice's birthday today - she turned 54! One of the other volunteers - Laura (from Perth) got her hair braided. It took 3 hours to do! Kate and Calvin went to Mwangaza SDA Church this Sabbath morning. It was a short walk from our house to the church and when we got there it was a double storey, open-air building. It was massive! We sat upstairs on the rough concrete stands which gave Kate a sore bottom! There were probably 800, maybe even 1000 people in the congregation with people of all ages! The main service was nice - most of it was in English. There were some beautiful songs and special items by the women's choir and the main church choir. The sermon was a nice message however was veeeeeerryyyyy long and probably could have been said in about 20 minutes instead of taking a whole hour... It seems most churches in Nairobi/Kenya/Africa have long services - on the billboards for many different churches, some have services going for 3-4 hours! And there are a lot of churches! Every street, every alleyway, every corner, there is some sort of church and so many different denominations. After church, we got an Uber into the city ($8 for a 50 minute ride) and went to the Nairobi Railway Museum. But before we went to the museum, we had to get something eat. Listening to looooong sermons makes for hungry work - so we went to the nearest restaurant (a veeeeery local place) for some chapati and beef and fish fillet all costing Ksh400 ($5). Now, Kate and Calvin aren't usually museum types but this was a special one as Kate's grandfather, Albert Heath, worked for the East African Railways & Harbours from 1952 to 1971. Unfortunately, the museum is in the process of renovating so the records of all the workers were still in storage which meant we weren't able to find any mention of Albert, however we were still able to look at some of the photos and models and maps of the railways, read about the "Lunatic Line", and jump up into some of the locomotives. Returned to the house in the evening and the volunteers were busy preparing a meal for the birthday girl. Laura even made an ice-cream cake. It was about 9 pm by the time we got to eat - Calvin's stomach was making growls as loud as a lion. Chapati, cabbage, lentils, rice - too much to eat, but too good not to overeat.
