Soongies' Great Adventure
Today, Alice invited the volunteers to her church - Nairobi West Friends Church - as they were having a groundbreaking ceremony for the new site of their church. Some of us - Chiara, Carmen, Kate and Calvin went along. We didn't really know what to expect - none of us had ever been to a Quakers service before. We got the van to the new church site. If Kate thought yesterdays sermon was long, she wasn't prepared for today's service! When we finally arrived, at about 9am, it looked like a wedding was about to start! People were very nicely dressed and there was heaps of singing and dancing. There was a marquee set up on the grass. We got a handkerchief pinned to our shirts (we found out later that they are actually a fundraiser but Alice paid for us)! The service had already started at about 7:30 but people just gradually started turning up over the course of the morning. Everyone looked like they were having a lot of fun with their praise! Most of the songs and talking was in Swahili although there was some English spoken. After about 4 hours (and Calvin sneakily playing a bit of phone solitaire and making a swan from his handkerchief), we got to leave the service (it was still going though). But then someone told us that we couldn't leave until we had eaten some of their food. So then we went into another room waiting for food but we never got to eat as we were waiting for the service to finish to start eating but it was still going on! At about 1:30, we finally left...the service still going on! It was quite a long journey back home. On the way, Alice stopped off at the live chicken market (we initially thought she was going to buy a chicken to use at dinner but luckily she actually just got some potatoes, mangoes and sugar cane). We were pretty hungry by the time we got home so Alice made some French fries with the potatoes for lunch. Then we just relaxed, watched a movie, then played cards and had dinner.
