Soongies' Great Adventure
So power came back in the early hours of the morning! And as a bonus, it had stopped raining and we actually saw some sun rays. Perfect for the age-old chore of washing clothes by hand. It's amazing how much dirt and dust clothes accumulate - the washing water never seemed to run clear even after 2 washes and rinses - but definitely cleaner than before! Chiara, Kate and Calvin went to Karura Forest today. It's an urban forest in Nairobi with waterfalls and caves, and trees too. Fearing another 5 hour bus and matatu journey, we decided to take the easy way there - Uber. The Uber was a little Corolla but it probably needed to be a Prado. The roads we took looked like they were hit by a meteor shower the day before! Also, the amount of foot traffic, car traffic, matatu traffic and bus traffic is monumental which makes for slow going. It's incredible to see how people transport goods - people-drawn trailers, huge bags on backs, wheeling individual truck tyres around. Somewhat organised chaos. The forest was a nice reprieve from the busy and polluted city - a breath of fresh air. It was mostly rainforest and it was a short walk from the entrance to the waterfall and back taking about 1.5 hours. Kate touched a white slug - not by choice, by accident. Her scream probably woke the bats from the cave because by the time we got to the cave, there were no bats to be seen. We were pretty hungry by the time we finished our walk - it was about 3 pm. Took an Uber and had a late lunch at Westgate Mall at the Thai restaurant. Chiara was so excited to eat some Asian food - she said, "I'm so happy I could cry!". It was actually so good to eat rice noodles. Kate and Calvin have never been so excited to have broccolini and bok choy! Calvin also has a local SIM now. We're inadvertently collecting SIM cards from around the world - so far, Namibia and Kenya. We were fortunate with the weather today - but on the Uber back home, it started to storm. Fortunately, Carmen had amazingly taken our clothes in from the line outside so we had dry clothes! Tonight we had a farewell dinner for Chiara as well as us. It is tradition for Alice to cook a big meal and give little gifts the day before leaving. We told Alice we could join in on Chiara's farewell so she wouldn't have to cook 2 big meals within a couple of days. Dinner was served at about 10:30pm so we were ready for dinner! After dinner we had to go around the circle and say something about each of the volunteers while they also said things about us. Alice then presented Kate with a home-made African skirt, a necklace and some artwork and Calvin was presented with a shirt and some artwork. Not quite sure how it is all going to fit in our suitcase! Not surprisingly it was a very late night!
