Soongies' Great Adventure
Kate was feeling much better this morning! We had our buffet breakfast before checking out for the 6 hour drive from Halali camp back to Windhoek. Our biggest priority was finding someone to clean our car so that we wouldn't get charged by the car hire company, knowing we had to return it the next day. Stopped at a few towns on the way to Windhoek but there were a few too many 'dodgy’ people lurking so we avoided getting out of the car as much as possible. Ended up at Okahandja, about 45 mins from Windhoek, and pulled into a Puma petrol station where we found 2 service staff – Domingo and Elizabeth - who said they could wash our car (don’t think this was part of their JDF). They were the exception to Namibian hospitality – friendly and jovial and keen to help. Kate and Calvin have decided that Namibian service is probably not the best in the continent. Elizabeth spent a bit of time looking Kate up and down and then said she had nice shoes (Havaianas) and asked if she had a spare pair to give her. Kate was wondering how Elizabeth was going to try to steal her shoes off her feet – she just clenched her long toes and hoped for the best! She also asked Kate if she had a spare old shirt to give her – which she didn’t as every piece of clothing in the suitcase is very valuable considering there isn’t that much to last a year! The plan for the evening was to meet up with the cousin of Soma, one of our Geraldton friends, and then sleep at a couchsurfer’s place. We met up with Shingi and Brian and their gorgeous daughter, Alice, at a mall and then we had a lovely evening getting to know each other and sharing stories. We went bowling and played table soccer, and then had a yummy dinner at Spurs. They were the best to hang out with! We hope they move to Australia! Our couchsurfer that we arranged was going to be out at a jazz festival until quite late (by late, we mean 1030 pm) – we didn’t really want to hang around the suburbs of Windhoek late at night (it’s pretty scary) so we decided to book a hotel on lastminute.com (also included buffet breakfast!). We are such backpackers… Hotel was actually a resort and was AMAZING – ironically the jazz festival was happening right across the road so we could probably have partied hard with the couchsurfer.
