India and Nepal 2022
Today is the lunar moon new year festival and across the city, the Chinese community is celebrating the year of the rooster.
In the office on Friday I hear the sound of drums and symbols and go downstairs to watch the dragon dance.Later that same day, I spot another dance performance in the grounds of the Novotel hotel. Its colourful, skillful and full of vitality which is a real tonic for me!
The costumes are white, red yellow colours and I see several truck loads of dance groups on the Yangon streets today.
On the Saturday evening, I head down to Chinatown with Kathleen, Jane, Chris, Melani and Hilary. The place is heaving with people and there is a party atmosphere with live music and dragon parades. The temples are illuminated and hundreds of lanterns adorn the streets glowing a rich red colour in the night sky.
19th Street is famous for its street restaurants and we eventually find a table and have a great time drinking beer from a giant dispenser and eating sea bream, mushrooms and kale. There are a few foreigners in town tonight joining in the festivities which will last for three or four days.
The streets in Chinatown are a reminder of 'old Rangoon' - full of character and characters! Many streets have names to highlight the trades like merchants street, books street and so on. Let's hope that the year of the rooster is a good one for everyone.
