India and Nepal 2022
It feels strange being in a mainly Buddhist country in 33 degree heat for the build up to Christmas.
In early December, the first signs begin to appear including Christmas lights and decorations in supermarkets and restaurants.Artificial fir trees, some with golden reindeer appear outside shopping malls.
As I am driven along the main road routes in Yangon, more buildings become lit up and more unusual Christmas sights appear like an illuminated Eiffel tower outside the Novotel Hotel.
There is a tradition here for different religious occasions being to be recognized. This year for the first time, Eid and Diwali have been announced as public holidays.
My office contains a number of Christians and a number of the network members are also Christian including, for example, Mothers Union, Kayin Baptist convention and the Myanmar Council of churches.
I celebrate Christmas at work with a party during which my VSO colleague Cora explains the religious significance and I talk about the modern day traditions.
Another festive event which reminds me of home is the carol service at the cathedral here in Yangon. All the usual favourites with the exception of 'In the bleak midwinter'!
On Christmas eve, I will be joining a Christmas buffet and music event. Turkey with cranberry sauce and Christmas pudding are both on the menu!
