India and Nepal 2022
I've finally got round to writing some notes about food here in Myanmar.
There are three options for me - to cook at home; to eat in a restaurant/cafe; or street food.
Cooking at home can be fun especially using the great variety of vegetables available from the markets. I have only a one ring electric cooker and so getting rice and chicken and vegetables to be ready at the same time is a challenge!
Street food is available everywhere and on many street corners near my house. My landlord advised me that it may not be suitable for my foreigner stomach and so I have steered clear.
Restauarant or or cafe food at lunchtime or evening is often cheap but of good quality. There is plenty of rice and noodle dishes with chicken, pork or seafood.
A local meal in Myanmar is mohinga - a fish based soup served with a rice side dish.
There are many bakeries in shopping malls and cakes are a popular foodstuff. There are also many kiosks selling cake, biscuits and crisps - not very nutritional but a basic snack.
I will write a longer blog on the phenomenon of betel nut chewing, which for many is the way to get through the day without need for food.

Marilyn Willwohl Have you tried them? I ate one, I was quite surprised by it's taste and texture and didn't find it unpleasant.
