Myanmar is a country with a population of about 55 million people. It is administered through seven states and seven regions across the country. I am working in Yangon region, the smallest geographical area but with the highest population.

States are largely based on ethnic lines and there are 135 ethnic groups throughout Myanmar. The largest ethnic group is the Bamar from which the country's previous name derived.
The ethnic groups comprise Bamar (68%), Shan (9%), Karen (7%), Rakhine (4%), Chinese (3%), Indian (2%), Mon (2%) and others (5%).

The states are Mon, Rakhine, Shan, Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, and the regions are Ayeyarwady, Bago, Magway, Mandalay, Sagaing, Tanintharyi and Yangon.

Additionally, there is the Union territory of Naypyidaw, which contains the capital city of Myanmar and where I hope to visit at some stage of my time here.
