India and Nepal 2022
In the backstreets of downtown Yangon lies a small war cemetery for Commonwealth servicemen.
Once again, it is perfectly maintained by local Burmese gardeners on behalf of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. They wear smart grey uniforms and and carry out their responsibilities with respect and attention to detail.
The graves are laid out in the same way as the other war cemeteries I have visited. This time I noticed something very poignant - pilot and navigator buried together side by side. Comrades in life and in death.
The cemetey was first used after the recapture of Rangoon by the British in 1945 and later the remains of servicemen from burial sites around the city were brought here including POWs who died in prison.
There are 1407 commonwealth servicemen buried here.and relatives will be relieved to know that the memory of these men is kept alive in a peaceful and respectful way, despite whatever regime has been in power in the recent past.
