India and Nepal 2022
This morning is really great. An hour and a half of meditation and then a small group of Ellen, Savita, Kathleen Chris and Melani meet up and head for coffee and breakfast at a nearby cafe.
The other trip today is to see the Aung San house, which is where the Myanmar leader lived and where his daughter Aung San Sui Kyi lived as a young girl.
Aung San was a revolutionary and nationalist, who is still revered today and considered the 'Father of the Nation'.
He was a strongly anti-British and anti- Japanese during his life and a great believer in a united Burma. During tumultuous times in the 1940s, he tried to position Burma as an independent nation, free from foreign control.
He is given the name 'Bogyoke' meaning Major General and most iconic images are of him in his army uniform.
In 1947, he signed an agreement at the Panglong conference with the leaders from other national groups in the country to seek support for a united country. On 19th July 1947, armed paramilitaries broke into the secretariat building and assassinated Aung San and six of his colleagues. He was just 32.
Now in 2016, just recently a new Panglong conference has taken place under the leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi to promote peace and reconciliation in modern day Myanmar.
