Kya Travels
Woke up today at about 7am. Yep. I woke up at 7am! Had some breakfast at the hostel. Cornflakes, toast with jam, and tea and coffee were provided. Not too exciting, but free food is gonna be a big deal for this trip! We went for a wander up Camden's high street, to go check out the famous Camden markets! Then we found out they were closed... Who would've thought we'd ever be early anywhere! :P So we just went for a wander around the streets. Pretty much everything was shut, the city doesn't seem to wake up until around 10am. This is my kinda town! After a bit of a wander we found ourselves in Primrose park, where we climbed the hill for a mega view over London. By the time we made our way back to the Main Street, (via the obligatory photos inside an English telephone booth) we headed back to the markets. They are huge! It's not like your typical market back home, it's like many many many markets all in the same couple of blocks. And it's not just straight up and down aisles, it's through winding alleyways, and cobblestone tunnels, filled with statues and carvings, upstairs, downstairs, in shops and in buildings. And there's heaps and heaps of little Asian food stores, all selling the same food, all giving out samples, and all yelling at you to get you to eat at theirs! Darren almost had a full meal just by taking samples at each stall! :P After wandering through the stalls for a couple of hours, and getting some lunch, we went back to the hostel where we sat in the courtyard and had a cuppa in the tiniest patch of summer sun we got. :P At around 6.30 we went down to a pub that I had been very highly recommended by a few friends, the Blues Kitchen. We met a friend of Darren's that he'd met on the PJ06 tour, Hinny, who has been living in London for a while. We had a pint with him there, but the music wasn't starting until much later, so we thought we'd come back in a bit. We went around the corner to Dublin Castle, which is a pub that Amy Winehouse used to work at, and had another pint there. Then we went to find some food. We were looking for a traditional fish and chip place, but instead found a Spanish place. We met a friend of Hinny's there, Ian, then had some tapas and sangria. It was the best tapas I've ever had. Apparently Australia doesn't really have any real Spanish food, the vegetable croquettes were delicious! (On a side note, apparently croquettes are big in Amsterdam, so stay tuned for THAT in a couple of months!) We headed to a pub by the tube called Worlds End for a couple more pints. Darren got three jäger shots for them, and copped them all in his drink at once.. Which was interesting... :P I was pretty wrecked by this point, so headed back to the hostel. Will have to do Blues Kitchen another night!
