Kya Travels
We got up this morning, and got ready to check out, and picked up our washing. As we were putting our washing away, Lyle realised one of his jumpers was missing... He went to talk to them about it, and they went to look for it, and couldn't find it, then the guy that did the washing denied ever seeing it... This hostel keeps getting dodgier and dodgier..... So we ended up checking out, but leaving our bags in the store room, while we went out for the day. We went for a walk to head towards the camera repair shop, cos my good camera was having lens issues but we got up to the supermarket and I changed my mind because I didn't think it would get repaired in time as we were planning to leave Edinburgh that afternoon. So instead, we walked into the city to find the tourist information centre to get some information on the Loch Lomond region. We walked through the city and across the bridge into the New town, where we walked along the street, across the grass and past Scott's Memorial, to the National Gallery of Edinburgh. We stopped for directions there, then turned back the other way to find the info centre. We went in and got a bunch of brochures and maps and that sort of thing, then we headed back across the bridge to find some lunch. We found a little cafe called Viva Mexico, and went in for some Mexican! Darren and I got something called a chimichanga, which was absolutely delicious. Like a burrito, but deep fried then covered in guacamole, cheese and jalapeños. It sounds really unhealthy, but it felt healthier than Mexican food back home, it wasn't super greasy or anything like we get at home, and it was yum yum yum yummy! After lunch we walked back to the train station to try get a hire car, but they were all sold out there, so after a little discussion, we decided maybe we could get a train to Glasgow, then hire a car in the next couple of days to go around Loch Lomond. We bought a ticket to Glasgow, which worked out cheaper for us to get a return than it would have for one way, because we could get a group ticket. So after we got our tickets, we went for a walk down to the Grassmarket, where we went in for a beer at the White Hart Inn, which is apparently Edinburgh's oldest pub, and established in 1516! It was pretty cool in there! I don't know if it still looks how it did originally, but they had cool quotes written over the beams on the roof, and tankards hung up along them too, which looked cool. After a drink, we headed back up to the hostel and grabbed our bags before walking down to the film house. We met Ash there, and went into the movie theatre, for the Edniburgh Film Festival, where we were seeing "Shorts from Sweden: The Hidden Reverse", which was a collection of short films from Swedish filmmakers and directors. The films were a very wide range of genres, with one that had everyone near tears (and Ash full out crying!), one that was a hilarious look at the ridiculous day to day life of a middle aged couple, one about a kid that killed animals, like burning ants, crushing wasps, catching mice etc, which was really graphic and gross, and a few others in there too. It was quite a good bunch of shorts, and they worked well with each other too, which was great. After the show, we got a photo out the front, then said goodbye to Ash and headed back to the station. We didn't have to wait long for a train, as they went every 15 minutes. But as we were about to jump onto one of the trains, the driver pointed us to a different train, that would takes 40 minutes less if we went to Queen st station instead of central. (Which is still very central anyway) So that was nice of him! The train ride was quite uneventful, and we got into Glasgow quite quickly. When we got in, we went for a walk around the city trying to look for a hostel. We did a few laps of the most central part of the city, and couldn't find any. And all three of our phones were dead.... So we decided to stop for dinner somewhere with wifi, and use the iPad to look up where to go. We found a place called the Bier Halle, which looked kinda cool, with pretty good prices, so we walked down the stairs there into the restaurant. It was really cool, set out like a proper German beer hall, and people were even drinking from steins! (Although you had to put down a deposit for them, because so many people would take them!) We got a couple of pizzas, and the boys got a hot dog as well. They came out on these big wooden pizza boards, with a pizza cutter, so you could cut them yourself. That was pretty cool. And they were delicious. We had a bit of a google search for hostels, and got some tips from one of the waitresses too, so when we left, we had the direction to walk in. Not far away we found the Euro hostel, which looked really really cool, so we went in. But they were booked out... The girl at the desk pointed us in the direction of a few more hotels and inn type places, so we walked to a few others. They were also booked out.... We went back to the Euro hostel, to get directions for more places, and they let us use the phone to call ahead to a few places. After calling about 6 other places that were all booked out, we were getting a little worried... Looking around the hostel we were in, we realised there was an abnormal amount of Robbie Williams merchandise and videos and songs going on, then found out he was playing over the next two days in Glasgow.. We tried calling pretty much every accommodation place in Glasgow and the surrounding area, and literally everywhere was totally booked out. Crazy. So at a bit of a loss at what to do, we made our way back to the station, to use our return ticket to Edinburgh! Lucky we got it, and lucky we didn't chuck it out!! We were thinking about stopping at a random stop on the way, but as it was getting late, we were on the last train to Edinburgh, so we didn't want to get stranded anywhere! After another boring old train ride, we got back into Edinburgh city, and went for a walk up the street to find a hostel. We didn't want to stay back at that other one, as it was so far away! We found one just up the street called Edinburgh Backpackers, so we went in there, and were lucky enough to get a room there! Darren was looking at getting a private room, because he'd been sleeping pretty badly the last couple of days, but instead of paying the extra money for that, the girl at the counter helped us out by putting us in an empty room, which was super nice of her! We went up to the room, dumped our stuff and went straight to bed! The hostel was super noisy, which was so annoying! Our room was between the common room and the kitchen, and at one stage there were a bunch of people right outside our room, very noisily complaining about how they had been told off for being noisy! Argh! Lucky I can sleep through everything, and lucky the boys had their iPods!! At least the beds were super comfy!
