Shark Bay is one of only a handful of special regions in the world to meet all criteria for World Heritage listing. Some of the marine life include the humpback and southern right whales, dugong, mantra rays, turtles and dolphins. Monkey Mia is in Shark Bay.
We set off at 8:30 knowing that the dolphins usually appear for feeding early in the morning. As we arrived we could see a crowd on the edge of the water so joined them. There were about 8 dolphins swimming close to the shore. We were allowed to wade in up to our knees but no further and the wardens talked to us about the dolphins. After about 5 minutes it was feeding time and everybody had to exit the water and wait to be invited to feed a dolphin (if you were lucky!).
It was a wonderful sight but it's a shame that you are no longer allowed to swim with or touch them anymore as you used to be able to. They are such endearing creatures as they always look as though they are smiling but apparently it's to do with their muscle structure in their faces.
After about half an hour, just as we had finished our breakfast, they were back. We went down to the beach again and Mick was lucky enough to be chosen to feed a dolphin but the dolphin wasn't hungry and refused to take it!
The colours of the water around the bay and in Little Lagoon ranged from green to turquoise to bright blue and a lot of the water is very shallow. We stopped at Little lagoon on the way back and I had a paddle.
This afternoon we sat on Denham beach for a while but it was extremely windy although the sun was hot. All of a sudden a group (don't know collective noun!) of emus walked down the road, past the cottages where we are staying, turned into a space between the buildings and disappeared into the bush behind! Amazing. I think there were 4 adults and 3 babies.
Tomorrow we set off on the trek back to Perth and hope to get to Geraldton to stay the night.
PS I fogot to say we also saw a turtle in the water.
PPS An emu has just walked past our window!!

Christine and Stuart Thanks for the postcard of the super pit. Yes, it did remind me of work for about 5 seconds! I would have enjoyed the chance to drive one of those trucks. Your visit to Pinnacles brought back fond memories. Did Mick eat the dinner the dolphin didn't want? You have plenty of frog spawn at home. See you soon. Christine and Stuart
Jenny and Kim It must be worth the long, long drive to see something so spectacular. The places you are seeing just get better and bettter. Everywhere looks so vast. The car needs to be in tip top condition to do the miles! If it broke down you would wait a long time for the 'AA'. If Mick is missing his friend from the Zoo he can go to Jewels garden centre (near Sainsbury), when you get home, to meet or even buy its mate. I saw it yesterday when we went past. More than life size. It is snowing again here and very, very cold.
