Again, after talking to other campers, we decided to spend a couple of days at Karumba, north of Normanton. I was a bit concerned as we have a lot of ground to cover before we are due in Carnarvon WA. Allen assured me we can spare the time.
Queensland had a long weekend and all the shops were shut. We were recommended to stay behind a service station as it was a smaller camp ground with great facilities and reasonably priced. It turned out to be great - right beside a lagoon with lots of water birds and kangaroos frequenting it.
Karumba has two areas to stay, the town area and the point, they are about 4 or 5 kms apart. We stayed at the point. Everyone uses small tinnies up here even though there are crocs and no one seems to be concerned about them. We didnt take our boat off the car because the fish were scarce and so were the mud crabs. Bread turned out to be scarce too!! Allen went to the bakery at 7.45am and the bakery had sold 480 loaves already. The first day we went to the bakery at about lunch time and there was nothing left!!
Allen found a bowling green stuck out in the middle of nowhere - not a club, just a green. He found the caretaker and turned out that bowls were on the day after we arrived so he had a game and won - again! He has been winning in all of these towns lately.
Sunsets were beautiful here, see photos.
