After leaving an overnight stop at Burke and Wills Roadhouse, we travelled through to Cloncury. It was a friday and all the shops were shut!! We tried to find anything open but it turned out it was a public holdiay for the Cloncurry people for show day. It was so funny as there were about 50 caravans driving round and round the town all looking for supplies lol. If they had been open we may have stayed a couple of days but moved on to Mt Isa instead.
The town is a large mining town and the last chance to stock up the shopping before heading into the Northern Terrirtory outback. We decided to stay three nights. We arrived to a cold and drizzly day so the first night was just a set up and stay warm inside night. The following day we did our shopping and Allen had a rollup at the bowls club. We had a coffee at McCafe and viewed the town from the lookout. Day three, Sunday, Allen went to church in the morning and we did the tourist thing in the afternoon, and it is still cold here!
There is an underground hospital here that was built in 1942 following the bombing of Darwin. At the time it was felt that Mt Isa was a potential target should the Japanese push for more inland raids. It was built by volunteers and is tunnelled into the side of a hill behind the Mt Isa Base Hospital. We were too late for the tour so I only have one picture taken from a booklet. PS It is still freezing here today!!!
