What a lovely place this is! We were able to camp on high ground that was lovely grass near a tree overlooking the beautiful Theresa Creek Dam. The dam is used for water skiing and they have ski club rooms on site. On the weekends and school holidays it is packed with families as the place is perfect for them, set out with loads of grassy areas, playgound, kiosk and beach area. When we arrived it was empty and we enjoyed a few days of solitude. The are is in severe drought and it rained for two days, really steady soaking rain. I was so pleased for the people who wanted rain so badly. It didnt do us much good as the ground became soggy and restricted us a bit. Then the sun came out! Talk about steamy, we were in a constant saunda! I was sweating all the time, it was dripping of by face constantly. I must have the cleanest pores around!
Allen and friend Ray put the boat out and set traps for Redclaw Crayfish. The traps are left out overnight and collected at first light in the morning. Our best catch was about 80 redclaw, but dont get excited as by the time you take off the head and peel them you only get a small bowl of meat. We had redclaw sandwiches, redclaw cocktails with lettuces and sauce, and curried redclaw pasta. We shared them with friends and looked forward to our feed of redclaw each day.
Next came the Barramuni! Al was told to go to a certain spot to catch some barra as they were being caught by others, so off he goes and come home with a nice big barra!! So from then on it was get up early to go get the redclaw in and then crab the fishing rod and head off to get the barra. A bit exhausting this retirement. We shared our catch with everyone around us as I cooked up battered barra, crumbed barra and floured batter. We were eating like kings and hardly ate anything else.
This place is truely a gem. Lovely grassy area looking out over the dam with the boat parked in front of us, redclaw and barra for the taking, a kiosk for the occasional icecream. and toilets and showers....cost $10 a night per caravan. Not bad eh!
