After our week at the Theresa Creek Dam being fed redclaw and barramundi we experienced a totally new camp area.
Sapphire is in the gemfields of Queensland, it is close to Rubyvale and both places have Sapphires to be found. These towns are real shanty towns with nothing permanent. The area is dotted with sheds, old vans, old buses and anything they can use to work their block for gems. A number of places offer a bucket of dirt/rocks that can be washed and searched for a special find. We went to one and paid $10 for our dirt and found a number of small sapphires. We learnt a lot about the area and how to find gems. Then the following day we went to another place and bought a bucket of dirt for $15 and found heaps of small gems and one quite large one about the size of a 10cent coin a green colour and will be able to be cut and made into jewellry. Another one or two may also be able to be cut.
This has been a very different experience for us and we have learnt a lot from it. How lucky are we to be able to experience so many various differnces in our huge country. We feel very blessed.
