We came to Omo island as it was recommended by somebody we met. It is 4 x 2 km in size with about 150 inhabitants. A peaceful place he said !! It was not mentioned in any of our books, so we only had the chart info to work by. The harbour was quite full but yachts kept coming in till after dark, by the time we went to sleep we were in a line of four yachts, they were quite small folk boats!! We presumed they couldnt of even had a bucket to pee in as they were across our boat all night long and preparing to leave at 05.00. To say I was not pleased was an understatement. We were going to move on but decided to stay an extra day but move to a quieter part of the harbour. When we engaged the gear to move the engine would not rev correctly and was vibrating badly. We tied back up on the other side, I stripped all the cables down, nothing wrong there!! So a dive down to the propeller was going to be needed. A toss of the coin to decide the driver!! Heads I dive, tales I dive. Brenda decided to watched for jelly fish. We have a three blade feathering prop called a kiwi prop. On my first dive I saw nothing wrong. My second dive I thought I saw a missing stop, these stop the blades when in reverse, after another breather I went under again. There are 2 missing stops out of 3, causing the blades to go all the way round making the vibration. This not repairable while in the water so we will have to be lifted. The harbour master said there is no way on the island so we need to go to the mainland about 12 nm. As it's the weekend he was unable to contact the yard. We have a spare propeller so once lifted it should not be a big job to swop them over. A simple job back in the uk, just dry out between tides but without any tides we need a big crane. We made use of the time and cycled round the island stopping for a swim on a deserted beach, we had read that the jelly fish did not sting, up to now we had been avoiding swimming with them, other people did not bother about them, then so very gingerly I touched one! No sting, then I picked one up still nothing. So now we don't worry about them any more. The houses are a mixture of old cottages and modern holiday homes, there are a lot of them for sale, a Holiday chalet will cost about 60k. Apart from the few farms it looks like the Islands population is in decline.
