Nykøbing is a large town down a long narrow channel that separates the islands of Lolland and Falster. For us it’s a shot cut back out to the sea on our trip home, we have sailed this passage before without any problems, Keith who is still sailing with us was transiting this channel four years ago when he hit an uncharted rock, splitting his rudder in half. Luckily he did not take on water and was rescued by the lifeboat, his insurance company paid for the repairs but was in the town for a few weeks. He explained to us that this channel was made by a glacier, when a glacier moves along giant boulders roll underneath it and are pushed into the ground. Over the years these huge rocks gradually rise out of the silt and wait below the surface for unsuspecting yachtsmen. Years ago when this channel was used by fishermen when a rock was found they would blow it up with dynamite.
