Soongies' Great Adventure
Preikestolen, known as Pulpit Rock, was about 10 minutes drive from where we were staying. It's a large rocky platform 604 m high overlooking Lysefjorden. Despite a foggy morning, it soon started to clear and after a quick detour to the supermarket to get some rolls and snackable vegetables, we drove out to the Preikestolen carpark. Our Airbnb host, Egil, had told us that you can park at the hotel just next to the car park for free which would mean that we wouldn't have to pay NOK 200. When we got to the hotel carpark though, a man started waving at us and told us we need to park in the Preikestolen carpark and that we weren't allowed to park at the hotel. We thought he was just trying to get us to pay NOK 200 but it turns out that the money actually goes towards maintaining the track to Preikestolen. The walk to Pulpit Rock was a stunner. It was a cracking day for it too - blue skies and a fairly hot sun! The 3.8 km track led us through birch forests, pine forests, up stone stairways running with fresh snowmelt, rivers flowing with the clearest water, past landings with beautiful views over fjord, on boardwalks through snowy meadows, past frozen lakes and up onto the Pulpit Rock itself. The path was easy at first, but it soon became snowy or icy or a slushy mix. About halfway up, we snacked on our mini carrots and sugar snap peas. Then we rewarded ourselves at the top of Preikestolen with cheese and egg rolls and an orange. The view from the top was amazing - such a beautiful part of the world. We made it back down to the carpark about 6 hours after leaving it! Kate was glad to get back to the car so she could take off her shoes which were causing a lot of pain. We went to the shops to grab some groceries for dinner - nachos/chilli con carne. When we got back to the house, we realised we had lost the key somewhere on the walk to Preikestolen! It was in Kate's jacket pocket but it must have fallen out at some point. Fortunately, Egil and his wife, Lucille, were very understanding and lovely and told us it didn't matter - they gave us another key. Nachos/chilli con carne was a very welcome dinner after a long day. We were all even a bit too tired to play Backpacker tonight and just watched some TV - something we hadn't done in ages!
