Soongies' Great Adventure
No rain this morning despite the weather forecasting it - Calvin took the opportunity to go for a run next to the river to discover some waterfalls. Around mid-morning, it was time to go on the Flåmsbana - one of the most beautiful train trips in the world! We drove the 20 mins from our accommodation into Flåm and stopped in at the bakery for a snack to take with us on the train journey. Soon enough it was time to board. The journey was a 20 km, 2 hour return trip from Flåm to Myrdal and then back to Flåm and it certainly didn't disappoint - it was pretty spectacular. On a slight incline all the way to Myrdal, ending up at about 867 metres above sea level, we saw amazing snow covered mountains, plenty of waterfalls (some frozen, some flowing) and cute colourful houses surrounded by snow. The train stopped a couple of times so the passengers could get off. At the first stop we all got off to see Kjosfossen waterfall but only Tim braved the hectic wind at the second stop! After the train journey we headed to the Co-op supermarket in Flåm to buy some rolls, filling and potato salad for lunch which we ate on the benches outside the tourist information centre. Then we drove from Flåm to Stegastein - a beautiful lookout (which juts out from a mountain) with views over Aurland fjord. The drive up was pretty intense - a very narrow road for the majority of the drive up the mountain (but not one way) with plenty of hairpin bends and only the occasional place to pull over for oncoming traffic. Needless to say - Kate did not nominate herself as driver for this leg! Luckily it's not peak season so we didn't meet too many cars going the other direction! The view at the top was worth the drive though. After taking in the view it was time to head back down those hairpin bends and drive back to our accommodation ready for a relaxing afternoon of blogging!
