Soongies' Great Adventure
We had a nice relaxing morning at home before heading out ready for some more exploring. We drove to the nearby tourist office to get some ideas for today. Most of the good attractions were apparently closed as it's not close enough to summer yet but the very friendly people there did recommend that we catch the ferry from Tau (about a 10 minute drive away) to Stavanger. The ferry ride was a nice 20 minute journey. Once we got to Stavanger we headed through the main part of town on the hunt for somewhere to eat a relatively inexpensive lunch. On the way we walked along Olvre Holmegate, known for its colourful buildings. We eventually found XO Pub where we managed to get steak / fish sandwiches for $14 each - a Norwegian bargain! After lunch we strolled along the water and to the tourist office looking for suggestions for what to do in Stavanger. The lady there questioned Calvin like she was a customs officer - where are you staying? What are you doing here? Why are you in Norway? Where are you from? Before Calvin had time to respond to a question she was onto the next one!! No passport required though! The options were a visit to the oil museum, sardine canning museum and / or a walk through old town and into the concert house. We decided to skip on the museums (sorry Dad!) and went for the latter two. Old town was very quaint with lots of old white timber houses lining the cobble stoned streets. And then the very modern concert house had a very impressive view over the ocean. On the walk back to the ferry we searched for waffles as Tim was really craving a waffle but we had no luck. After the ferry trip back to Tau and the big climb up the stairs to the car park we stopped off at the supermarket to get supplies and of course an icecream each (not quite a waffle but better than nothing)! At home, there was an incredible sunset. Calvin decided to head out to greet the local sheep and capture the colours of the sunset.
