Soongies' Great Adventure
After being very blessed with the weather in Jørpeland and Stavanger, we awoke to a rainy day for our long drive to Bergen today. We got ready and packed up, said goodbye to our beautiful accommodation overlooking the fjord and headed onto Bergen - about a 5 hour drive. The lady at the tourist office in Jørpeland yesterday recommended taking the scenic route up instead of just taking the ferry to Stavanger and then driving up that way. So we took the scenic route - National Tourist Route Ryfylke 13. And it certainly was very beautiful! There were tall cliffs on either side and then all of a sudden as you drive around the bend, it would open up to a fjord. Rivers rushing from the snowmelt ran along side the road and waterfalls crashing down the side of the cliffs could be seen every few hundred metres! We stopped a few times to take in the views. Nothing like a massive waterfall to help you feel refreshed on a long drive! We kept following our GPS, taking the ferry from Hjelmeland to Nesvik, driving up to Odda and then alongside the Sørfjorden up to near a village called Lofthus. It was here, about 10 km from the next ferry, that we discovered the road was closed! A big yellow sign and a boom gate barred the way. We decided to head back to Odda (the base town for Trolltunga) and ask the friendly tourist office staff the best way to get to Bergen. The lady advised us to get the ferry from Årsnes to Gjermundshamn which would then get us onto the road to Bergen. So we did exactly that. It was a bit of a wait for the ferry but, after about 9 hours of being on the road, we finally pulled in to Bergen and out the front of our Airbnb (which felt like more of a hostel within a house). We were pretty exhausted but it felt good to walk down to the shops to get some dinner. 3 frozen pizzas and a packet of frozen vegetables (all costing about $40) which were cooked and consumed very quickly after getting back to our accommodation!
