Quiet start to the day - watching vans depart and arrive at the campground. Eventually we made our way up to the Town Centre and joined the Spear and Boomerang Throwing at 11am. It was a great free activity especially for children. Renee & Eamon really enjoyed it, and Mum got to have a go too.
From there we got our coffee/hot chocolate and drove out to Kata Tjuta (aka The Olgas), which is about 50 km from Ayers Rock Resort. Along the way, there's a dune viewing walk, but a small bushfire was in progress, so we skipped it (we dropped in on the way home though, and quite a large area was blackened, and a log was still burning - the view was pretty good).
At Kata Tjuta we checked out the sunset viewing area, then moved on to the Valley of the Winds. We headed to the Karu Lookout which was great especially when Eamon spotted a little chameleon lizard in the rocks. We then proceeded to the Karingana Lookout which was quite spectacular - we weren't expecting a lush green area to be in the middle of the big brown domes of rock! We were feeling fit, so ended up doing the Full Circuit, which is 7.4 kms, and difficult in places - lots of stones, steps, uneven ground and a good supply of flies, but we had a great time and felt a real sense of achievement.
We stopped at the Outback Pioneer Hotel for a beer, soft drink and chips to end a lovely day - but then we had a surprise Skype call from Nanna & Vincent which was fantastic as we haven't actually seen Nanna since mid-June when she left for Ireland. Vincent joined her there just a couple of days ago, so it was great to see and speak to them both. It ended the day perfectly - but the kids are still desperate for Dad to come back - he's due in at 1.15 tomorrow.
