We departed the much enjoyed Katherine area today for a longish drive to Litchfield National Park. For lunch we stopped at Adelaide River - it was lush and green and the caravan park looked like fun!

Soon after we hit the road again, we turned off the Stuart Highway to Batchelor - a cute town near the start of the Litchfield National Park. We had noticed some plumes of smoke on our approach to the Park, and sure enough during the drive from Batchelor to the western side of the national park, we travelled through lots of haze from various small bushfires, and many spots were still on fire and smouldering. No danger however, but it did seem like a storm was approaching with the colour of the sky.

First stop in the National Park was the Magnetic Termite Mounds: hundreds of mounds are here, and they all face north/south - it looks like a cemetery. There's also a mound about 4 metres tall!

Next stop was Florence Falls: a spectacular double waterfall. We had a nice lookout from the viewing platform, and didn't think we'd bother with a swim. However, once we descended 135 steps down to the plunge pool, Renee & Eamon couldn't resist so they just waded in with their clothes on and enjoyed a refreshing dip.

Further on the Litchfield Park Road was the turnoff to Tolmer Falls. It's a short 400m walk to a viewing platform and the plunge pool there looked very inviting, but it was about 80m down a big cliff. Beautiful all the same.

Late afternoon we made it to Wangi Falls. It has two falls cascading into a big freshwater pool. We waded across to the falls, and enjoyed some time in the warm 'spa' created at the base of one of the falls. We brought a couple of bevies and chips down with us - it was a perfect relaxing end to the day.

Our accommodation for the night was Litchfield Safari Camp - Renee & Eamon tested out the 'charming' double above-ground swimming pools, and we had a yummy pork dinner - which just reminded me - on the way out of Wangi Falls we saw a family of 3 black pigs wandering around!
