4 weeks ago today we left Sydney, and the time has gone so fast! We've done about 5,500kms already, and we're having a fantastic time.
We left early today from Alice Springs (though not before we could partake in the Sunday pancakes at our caravan park). We passed through the Tropic of Capricorn, and about 400km later after stops at Ti Tree and Barrow Creek we arrived at the Devil's Marbles in the early afternoon (~100km before Tennant Creek), and the hottest day we've experienced so far at 34 degrees. There's a resident dingo in the campground and he was in the shady information shelter, so we left him alone for a while!
We 'free camped' tonight ($7.70) right here at Devil's Marbles because it's so beautiful - everyone's quite cosy, and no generators are allowed, so no power, no aircon, etc (and of course no internet). We spent the late afternoon wandering around, through and over the crazy 'marbles' here - the rocks look smooth but they're actually quite rough (as Eamon found when he blew a hole in his shorts!). There are gigantic boulders of kind of rounded shapes, all stacked somehow on top of each other, and lots of clusters of them. Across the campground is Devil's Pebbles, which are little hills of smaller boulders. We all enjoyed climbing amongst the big and little rocks and the sunset was a lovely end to the day (and it cooled us down!)
