Well, it´s official. I´m in Rio de Janeiro!!! I finally went up Corcovado and met good ol´ Jesus myself... after so many pictures from far far away, he seemed HUGE. I was so sad to go without our whole group of friends but the sun was out, I had all afternoon, and the day we WANTED to go might rain. At this point, I dont have time to risk so we decided to go and hopefully I can go again with everyone.
Christ of Redeemer is probably one of the most famous sights in Rio and it´s actually kind of funny when you think about it... like most main tourist attractions (Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, Four Corners, Big Ben), it doesnt DO anything. There´s no crazy exhilirating ride. No museum of its history. It´s pretty much a $30 photo shoot with a statue (and some heart-wrenchingly expensive snacks and souvenirs). No no, I´m kidding. It´s cool, and has a great view. But it is hilarious to just sit and watch all the crazy (and pushy) tourists take silly pictures with their arms in all directions, and hanging over the balcony, jumping in front of the sunset... I cant imagine how many pictures of Christ of Redeemer get posted on facebook everyday.
We had wanted to hike it, it´s like 2 hours. But we discovered that you can only hike it with a tourguide and it´s cheaper with a group. Also, better with more advance. So we just took the train up and back down, interesting wagon full of Spanish, English, Portuguese and a big group of Polish. A few scary hair-do´s (I felt like we were at the circus a little). And a great sunset. All in all, good day :-).
There´s one more thing checked off my to-do-before-I-leave-Rio list!!!
