The inland areas of outback Queensland have provided us with many lovely camp areas, all free! We have followed rivers, dams and weirs for a while now. We still have many more to go. Currently we are at a weir south west of Rockhampton toward Emerald. We intend to head to Emerald but are detouring to check out these wonderful waterways in this area. The area is in drought so many of the waterways are low in water but we still manage to enjoy what is there.
Water is scarce out here and we have to use it wisely. Many towns are not willing to give their water to travellers as they are struggling themselves. The ground is hard and cracked. All the insects are looking for water. The ants all edge Sandi's water bowl for a drink! Wasps are always hanging around when I do any washing and often in the shower too.
We look like staying here a couple of days so we can try our luck catching more 'red claw' (yabbie/crayfish type thingy). We are still traveling with friends we met about 6 weeks ago and the boys are having fun in the boat.
