Friday
Today we are off to the Underground Hospital and the Tent House and then off to have a look around the shops.
Before we went 'underground' there was some medical and dental memorabilia in the Beth Anderson museum. This was quite good and we took a few photos. We paid our $15 each for the guided tour and one of the tourists asked our volunteer guide whether Beth was the first nurse in Mt Isa or if she had started the Underground Hospital. Our guide didn't know when Beth had been in Mt Isa and suggested he could look it up. The tour started with an extremely basic history (which was written in the paper she had given us) as we walked up a very slight hill. As she told us how the nurses would bring the patients and gear up the hill whenever there as an air raid I asked where the original hospital had been. She was a little blunt and pointed to the existing hospital as if I should' e known and then left us at the entrance to have a look around and come back when we're ready. The hospital itself was quite interesting and everything in it was labelled. We really were disappointed with the tour - although it was not expensive we're really not sure what the $15 was for. The Tent House was also quite interesting and this was a fully self guided tour.
On to the shops - first stop KMart for some more undies and just a look around. We went looking for a $2 shop and found an electronics shop instead so bought a portable recharger for the phones. With all the photos I've been taking I keep flattening the battery. We walked along the streets finding a Best & Less, BCF, and Bunnings. Then we came across the Happy Box noodle shop so we took some more photos.
We've decided to go out tomorrow night for dinner and the local club - Buffs - has a courtesy bus so we call in to see what the meals are like. Looks pretty good. We go across the McDonalds for lunch and then head back to the park stopping on our way at the Camooweal Butcher in Mt Isa to order meat for the next leg of out trip.
I relaxed for the afternoon, even having a short sleep while Martin sets up the TV (vast box) so he can watch the football tonight. He has a lot of trouble finding the satellite and I wake up to a neighbour helping him with it. By the time I come out it's all set and ready for kick off. An easy night for dinner we heat up from frozen leftovers and watch telly.
