Friday
Up showered and breakfasted before 8.30 and then we start to pack slowly. I make some sandwiches to have for lunch when we get back from the tour. As we are packing the camper up one of the he couple from last night comes over and asks for a demo. We show them around and they are very impressed. By the time we're finished with them it's 10am and we have only 15 minutes to finish packing up and get to reception for our tour - we make it with minutes to spare.
This is a closed National Park so to see the lava tubes you must go on huge tour. This sounds a bit if a rip off at first but as our guide Clive explained when we were in one of the he tubes, the roof area of some tubes is quite thin in places and could collapse if a vehicle drove across it.
The tour we took was great, mostly on board walks with a few stairs, we visited 3 different tubes including The Archway. The photos do not do justice to the scenery.
Once back we ate our lunch then headed west. We stopped at Georgetown to buy some sausages and although we had the right butcher we couldn't get them. The butcher explained that he only makes those ones for the Undarra order as the townspeople don't like them that spicy. (We didn't think they were spicy at all). We bought the plain ones anyway so we'll see what they're like.
We kept moving west to a free camp at Gilbert River. Martin drives in and he spots Pat and George. We set up then go over and have pre dinner drinks with them. We catch up on where they've been and we do the same. They are a really nice couple and we laughed and talked to them for a couple of hours before coming back to our camp to cook tea.
After dinner we move inside while I catch up on my blog and Martin goes to bed - another early night.
