Monday
We get away a bit earlier this morning - 8.45am - and head back to Normanton to refuel. Well actually we get about halfway and Martin decides to use the final gerry can of fuel as he doesn't think we'll make it on what's left in the tank. After putting the 20 litres in he says that if we need more than 70 litres to refill we wouldn't have made it.
We stop briefly in town to take photos of the replica Krys the crocodile - the largest croc killed in Australia and then go to fill up - 71.8 litres. So glad we topped up on the way.
Today we'll be travelling to Cloncurry. We stop along the way at the Burke and Wills Roadhouse for lunch. The steak burgers with the lot were nice but certainly not worth the $18.50 each
We talk to some people we've come across a couple of times as they are heading the same way. They told us there's not much in Cloncurry, the caravan parks have been taken over by the mines and that they'll stay in a free camp before Cloncurry. We've read the same about the parks on WikiCamps but It's a bit early for us to stop for the day so we continue past the free camp and try our luck in Cloncurry.
I've read about a bush camp (Wal's Camp) and we try here first. It' nothing flash but at $15 a night it'll do us. The caretakers are from Tomago and we get talking to some other travellers again.
We have service again so start planning the next few days. We'll spend tomorrow checking out the sights of Cloncurry and then head towards Mt Isa hopefully about lunch time. We plan to stop at a free camp halfway along - there are a few to choose from and then arrive in Mt Isa on Wednesday. I ring and book us into a park at Mt Isa for 3 nights. We've also decided that we'll head to Birdsville via Boulia and Bedourie and will have to catch Winton and Longreach on our next adventure.
A quick dinner and shower before bed for a relatively early night.
