Monday
We're all packed and ready to go about 9am and head over to fill the water tanks. A "quick" stop in town to say goodbye and swap contact details with Peter and Rhonda, Chris and Shirley and we're on our way by 10am.
The plan is to head for Innaminka via Arrabury so that we can call in at Haddons Corner (the QLD and SA border). There are heaps of cars on the road (most are towing) and Martin calls ahead on the UHF radio to let them k now when he's about to overtake. Most are happy to let us pass but there are always those few that will speed up or move to the centre of the road.
It's as uneventful trip, we stop briefly near Betoota to photograph the Dreamtime Serpent - a sculpture on the side of a hill made from the local rocks. It's very impressive. Just past Betoota we take the turn to head southwest to Arrabury and find that the gravel road is in quite good condition. We turn south again towards Haddons Corner and the road becomes very rough. One more turn to go into the corner and we arrive around 2pm.
There is one covered picnic table and a fenced off bollard marking the corner. The top of the bollard has a plaque showing the Queensland area and South Australian area. After photos I grab a carrot and mandarin from the fridge for lunch and we press on. We decide that when it hits 3.30pm we'll start looking for somewhere to camp. As we travel though we decide that the Burke and Wills Dig Tree campground is a real possibility and we make it by about 5.30pm.
We push up the roof, open the ensuite and set up the toilet before looking at the dig tree and taking photos. Back at the van we open the kitchen, cook and eat dinner and then pack the kitchen away - by morning we'll be glad we did this.
