Friday
We get up a bit later this morning, there is no hurry as we are only going as far as Old Laura Homestead which again is only a couple of hours. While having breakfast Martin notices our back left tyre is looking flatter than the others so he pulls it off and finds a large screw embedded in it. After pulling it out and patching the tyre we pack up and shower before leaving Hann River Roadhouse and the animals.
The trip to Old Laura is uneventful and we find the camp ground and unhitch the cars. The campground is a little disappointing as there are no toilets or showers. As a QPark camp we needed a permit and although it was only $11.20 all the others have had basic facilities.
We do a basic set up leaving everything locked and head up to the old homestead for a look around. After photos we head back to Laura and lunch at the Quinkan Hotel. Martin had - you guessed it - a burger although this was an open Quinkan burger and no chips. The rest of us had the Barra burger and it was delicious. We had signal so some more Facebook postings, messages and emails checked before heading to spilt rock.
One of the Gwandalan ladies had told us about some aboriginal cave paintings at Split Rock but she couldn't recall where it was. As we looked at the maps around Laura we found it so decided to head out for a look.
The signs indicate a 30 minute round trip on the walking track so we set off with hats and a bottle of water. The track was very steep in parts but was stepped by rocks and had hand rails in parts. Once we arrived there was a viewing platform and seats and it was all in the he shade. The paintings were very clear (not as faded as others we've seen) and were explained by signs. It was really peaceful up there.
By the time we got back down it was iceblock time so we went back to Laura Roadhouse. Back to camp and we finished setting up the camper - Martin even tuned in the TV for tonight's football game. Mud Duck wasn't too impressed that Manly lost.
