After swapping contact details with Pat and George we head towards Karumba. We had booked at Normanton and were planning a day trip out to Karumba but so many people had suggested the other way. We've checked WikiCamps and there are three parks at Karumba Point. Other travellers have recommended the last park you get to but the Wiki write ups aren't that great (say it's a nice spot but packed in and staff a bit rude). The middle one seems to get the best write up even though it's behind a servo so we've decided to stop for lunch at Normanton and head out to Karumba to check it out.
Firstly we stop at Croydon for a walk around the town looking at the historic sights. We stop at the general store and it is a real old fashioned store with the stock behind the counter.
On to Normanton and it's very dry. The scenery changes a couple of times and we even pass an emu with 2 chicks. We stop for lunch at The Purple Pub as we've been told we must have a Purple Burger. Not really impressed with it as it was a pretty normal burger - not even a works burger.
When we arrive at Karumba we pass the first park which seems a bit crowded. We head down to the last one and they seem even more packed in although the sign says there are powered sites available. We asked about availability and were told that there was nothing that would fit our camper. Anyone that's seen our camper knows it's quite small although when fully extended it is 6.5 metres so we were surprised that we would not fit.
As we walked outside another couple (Georgie and Tom) who had heard the conversation and told us that they were behind the servo and it was lovely and friendly so we headed back to that one.
What a surprise once you go behind the servo. The sites are all spacious (long and wide) and the amenities are spotless. While they are not ensuite sites with an amenity at each site the block contains 7 separate rooms with toilet and shower. We set up and watched the wildlife - birds and wallabies in the lagoon behind us.
We went down to the pub at sunset and took some absolutely beautiful photos. We ordered dinner after some difficult decisions - Martin had the barramundi and I had a mixed grill. The mixed grill was crocodile sausages, mud crab, roo skewers and scallops wrapped in bacon. When it came out it was huge and Martin likes to tell everyone it was meant for two. Loved the croc sausages and the scallops but the roo skewers were a bit tough. The mud crab was absolutely delicious and I was covered in food by the time I had finished. After cleaning up in the bathroom we headed back to camp and watched some TV.
I got up to go to the toilet just before bed time and as I opened the camper door I heard some movement right by the door. Some wallabies had set up camp at the back door and I had startled them as much as they had me. For the rest of the he night we could hear them moving around the grounds and each time you would get up they'd scurry away.
