27/5 Lires to Finisterre 20km
Yesterday morning I decided to go off piste again taking the coastal path with 1600ft of ascent and descent.
A good choice as the views were spectacular again although I did wander off the route accidentally occasionally. Other than dodging a guided German group I had the morning paths from Lires to Praia de Rostro beach, near Castrexe, to myself.
I took my first early lunch break at the north end and then walked the beach of about a Km in the shallow water.
After the beach it got hotter and more rugged. The paths were narrow and although not precarious the drops towards the sea were not for anyone with vertigo! There was no shade to speak of so when I met Kate and John, from the UK, snacking in the shade of an outcrop I was happy to stop too and have a quick chat. They were doing the coastal path rather than the Camino and were celebrating their arrival by splashing out and having a night staying at Finisterre Lighthouse!
The day's walk ended with a steep ascent to a phone mast and descent to the beach to the west of Finisterre town. Today was the only day in 2 months that my one litre of water wasn't enough without any water fountains along the way. So, a thirsty arrival in Finisterre and instead of cleaning up I headed straight out with grimy legs for a large, refreshing caña con limón which I needed even after a couple of glasses of water at the Albergue Do Sol.
After a cleanup I wandered the town a little buying provisions for tomorrow. I had a menu of the day at the harbour which included grilled local fish with no English translation but quite like sea bass in taste and texture.
To end the day, I strolled back to the beach, found a rock and watched the sun set.
