21/4 Thursday Santillana to Comillas 22.5km
A dull start to the day - breakfast and weather! However, the scenery was pleasantly rustic as I walked to the company of the music on my phone.
I passed on the first coffee stop as I was just getting into my stride. That was a mistake as I didn’t get to the next open shop or cafe until about 2pm.
The architecture is gradually changing- more balconies on rural buildings and more ornate, but less attractive, churches such as the one at Cóbreces.
At the first beach, Playa de La Luaña, the cafe there was shut so I stopped and snacked on what I had - an old biscuit from breakfast 3 days ago, chocolate and almonds.
About 14km in I did find an open bar at La Iglesia. No food but I had a lemon drink, crisps and the apperetivo- bread sticks, a slice of cheese and 2 slices of cured meat.
Sitting outside I met Rafael, from Valencia, a pilgrim I’d seen but not spoken to but a very experienced Camino walker. Off he went and I followed slowly beginning to feel the three previous long days.
Why was my Albergue up hill in Comillas? Still, it’s very clean and a towel is provided. Just not food so I need to get out and wander in search of sustenance after a day lacking in that department.
