22/5 Sunday Hospital to Muxia 28km
Last night the car arrived as planned and Christoph, from Berlin, joined Tatjana and I for the evening meal. Noodle soup with chorizo seemed mostly to be from a packet but the beef stew and potato was tender and delicious.
We had a quiet night despite the thunderstorm! Tatjana and I are both clearly not early starters so headed out together, up the road to the bar for breakfast - no lift this time. It was Sunday do we both bought bananas for the day ahead. Soon we were at the road junction, aptly named The Great Divide, where we said goodbye as I was making for Muxia and Tatjana Finisterre.
The weather had closed in already with a light mist and gentle rain. Very few pilgrims now given the Albergue had been busy so perhaps Finisterre is the more popular option? Anyway, mostly woodland paths soon brought me to the pretty church in A Grixa which marked 11km done.
Woodland and rural paths continued to Senande where I stopped for refreshments and a bite to eat. I was very glad I decided to stop here as it was soon raining hard!
I only saw seven pilgrims going my way and a similar number heading back towards Santiago all day. The rain eased off after lunch and before long I was looking down on my first sea view for weeks at Merexo. From here I walked along the coast towards Muxia enjoying the sea views. Too much as I missed the signs and continued on a beach track which came to a dead end!
I doubled back and took a short cut through woodland to rejoin the route which had turned inland a little. Approaching Muxia I cut a little distance by crossing a very small stream estury straight onto Muxia beach. Just as I got close to the seafront road I saw a couple waving, shouting and coming my way. Amazingly it was Tony and Linda who I'd met a little before Santiago. They were about to take their long-promised dip in the sea. Lovely to see them again before I headed off to my Albergue.
I ate my leftovers for a meal and then had a wander around the town and out to the headland to catch the sunset. Lots of pilgrims spread around and I expect quirky contemplating their respective journeys. The skies had cleared so the views of the church, 0km mark, lighthouse and rocks were excellent.
