8/4 Friday Olabe to Alto de Morga
15km via Gernika
Today was a little grey but also mild. Pedro and Alfonso were also staying at the hostel and set out with us. They are Spanish friends who walk together all the time. Pedro is a proper mountaineer who climbs on snow and ice. Alfonso is 68 like me. I talked mostly to Alfonso in Spanglish!
A river and pretty countryside for about 6km to Gernika where we had an early pinchos lunch. We bought lunch for tomorrow too as there are no shops for 15km.
We also took time to visit the ceramic version of Picasso’s famous picture. I can’t explain but I felt very emotional here. We also saw the Gernika Tree - a piece of tree that was a small part of the town that survived the destruction of 1936.
Pedro and Alfonso were good company but really were holding back to walk with us. So we said goodbye with hugs and good wishes. Then it was gently up and into the countryside another 7km to Albergue Pozueta where I had booked ahead. Heike was lucky to get the last of 16 beds available.
There seems to be a routine in the albergues - arrive, shower, wash some clothes, check the walk and accommodation for the next day, catch up with the world. Tomorrow has been a stress as Bilbao seems full. Eventually found a 1 person AirBnB thankfully. Everyone here is having problems but Heike has a bed in a women only hostel.

Lynn Pickles So to the big city tomorrow! Well done so far. Holding the feet and legs are holding up! if your blogs tell the distance you walk each day I may be missing it. Maybe it is elsewhere on your webpage. do you have an app or a guide book that tells how far between food places and resting places. Have you read The Way, My Way by Bill Bennett (an Australian film maker)? My friend who is planning to walk the Camino perhaps next year is recommending it. One foot in front of the other!
Dave I try to put the distance at the top of the blog! Yes, I have an app from Wise Pilgrim which lists Route and accommodation etc. including map view. I also use OSMandMaps because you can download Camino route, maps and then gps so does not eat phone data. Read a few books but not that one.
