Today the girls opened their Gothia Youth World Cup campaign against one of the competition favourites Vaksala. The girls kicked off and tried to get their passing game going but in all honesty, it has to be said, this was one of their poorer displays in a lot of years. For so many key players to have an off day was very unusual and is something you cant get away with against teams of this calibre.
The Vaksala girls were physical and very well organised, hoping to catch us on the break. The girls went in 0-0 at half time hoping to re-group and play a lot better in the second half, however this didnt happen and proved to be much of the same as the first half. Vaksala opened the scoring with a 40 yard floated free kick which landed under the bar, then followed with a free header from a corner which everyone left. With not much time to go we pulled a goal back through Zoe Ness who lobbed the goalkeeper, from a dubiously onside position it has to be said, for a great finish. We pushed for the equaliser only to be caught on the break with a sucker punch as their forward scored with a free shot having not been closed down at all.
Very bad day at the office for the girls who now have to win both of their remaining games to go through to the knockout stages. Salenger tomorrow who were beaten 3-1 by the Canadians today.
