330 kms / 4 ½ hrs
80 Mile Beach - Broome
We were up early and on our way by 7:30am. We stopped at Sandfire Roadhouse for fuel then continued the further 330 kms to Broome. We arrived around 12pm and went straight to the tourist information centre. We found our accommodation details and headed to The Pistol Club (it's been recommended by numerous people along our travels). We were escorted to our site and before we unhitched we had lunch (as we were all starving) and then set-up.
The Pistol Club is quiet and you have a fairly spacious site and we are lucky enough to be in between two large trees so it's very shady. It was 30 degrees today.
We were going to take the kids for a swim at Cable Beach but drove past first and then decided to head back to the tourist information to ask some questions, we did a little shop at target (Josh broke his DVD player so it's caused lot's of fights with them sharing the one!), then woolworths then refuelled.
We quickly made roast chicken sandwiches/chicken salads and then headed to Gantheaume Point as the tides are low enough to see the Dinosaur Footprints. Well it was an adventure all right and I had a bit of a hissy fit at poor Rog. To get down to the water's edge was actually really hard as the sun was setting and there was moss over the rocks so it was really slippery and I was trying to help Josh down while Rog walked down carrying Bronte with no problems at all. Rog was at the bottom walking around for about 15 mins before he came back to help us. Anyway luckily Rog could walk on the mossy rocks as we were quickly able to see the dinosaur footprints before the tide was too high. They are believed to be those of a carnivorous species that lived 120 million years ago, the tracks are embedded in sandstone at the base of the cliff and can only be seen at low tides.
We then enjoyed watching our first beautiful Broome sunset then had a look around at Anastasia's Pool (which is a small man-made pool built by a former lighthouse keeper for his arthritic wife) and the lighthouse which has a large sea eagles nest. The mum and dad sea eagle were busy looking after their babies so there was lots of noise as the dad had caught the babies a fish for dinner.
We then headed back to the caravan for a shower and quiet time.
Ok, so maybe it's not so quiet! There are people at the shooting range now although it is only 7:30pm (it's probably too hot to shoot during the day!).
We saw wild dogs, heaps of cows, 2 brolga's and lots of eagles today. We can't believe how many eagles are in Broome. They fly around in flocks and are everywhere.
