As we pulled out of Ceduna- Nullarbor bound, Larry was in desperate need for a drink for the journey ahead...(he finally got his thirst quenched after Tara's poor service station navigation skills!) We finally started our Nullarbor journey. A strange feeling for the both of us as we had always dreamed of driving the Nullarbor.
It quickly set in that this dream was in fact a reality.
The constant flow of traffic especially road trains were all deserving of a wave or the rise of a finger to say g'day. Some were more willing to return the gesture than others!
After many hours on the road, we turned off to see the Head of Great Australian Bight... We weren't disappointed (although Tara wished we were there in peak Whale season where the sign read up to 70 whales could be seen playing close to the shore). We were both totally taken aback by the view of the stunning coastline as the waves constantly crashed against it.
After the Head of the Bight, we stopped at additional lookouts that were each more breathtaking than the other.
As we pulled up to Border Village (SA/WA) we were greeted by a very elaborate Quarantine checkpoint. We had heard that the inspections were quite thorough however it was Tara's sweet talking and fantastic acting skills that made the process a lot easier- but Judy did have to show her fridge (was only full of beer and champagne!) After a quick photo stop at he border sign, it was a mere few kilometres down the road to Eucla- out roadhouse accomodation.
When we thought of roadhouse accomodation, we envisaged a piece of dirt next to an old servo- how wrong we were! We both could easily have spent a week here- a quite park with fantastic facilities overlooking the Great Australian Bight.
After a long day of driving, it was nice to sit down, have a drink and watch the sunset. We are looking forward to exploring Eucla in the morning before heading off along the Nullarbor again!
