Soongies' Great Adventure
Well we woke up this morning, looked out the window, and to our surprise it wasn't raining! I say we were surprised because Bergen is the rainiest city in Europe, some even claim it is the rainiest city in the world!! It was time to embrace the dryness so we drove into central Bergen and firstly went to the tourist information centre to check for road closures for today's drive. The lady said we would probably have to do a convoy drive a couple of times! A convoy system is where you have to wait for a sufficient number of vehicles to line up and then follow behind a snow plough as it leads the convoy across a particularly challenging stretch of road, all the while you have to be careful to keep a constant adequate so you don't lose sight of the lights of the car in front of you! We needed to explore Bergen in its dry glory first so we took a funicular to the Fløyen mountain where we had great views over Bergen, especially of all the colourful houses. We then went for a little walk at the top before it was time to head back down again. By this point it was starting to drizzle but that wasn't going to stop us! We walked to Bryggen - a UNESCO site comprising a line of colourful buildings on the harbour. We stopped for morning tea at one of the colourful buildings then walked back to the car. As soon as we started driving, the rain started to come down so we got to experience the 'real' Bergen. As nice as Bergen was, we're really not sure how people enjoy living in such a wet, expensive city!! It was time to drive the 3 hours to Gudvangen. We were ready for this convoy system we were told about but fortunately we didn't end up having to do it and the drive was easy and uneventful! We arrived at the Gudvangen camping park (where we had booked a cabin) at about 2:00. There was snow everywhere - it was pretty spectacular! We couldn't check in until after 3:00 though so we drove into Flåm, about a 20 minute drive, to get some lunch and dinner supplies. Then it was time to settle into our cozy cabin and take in the snowy scenery around us. Tim went for a walk whilst Calvin and Kate relaxed. Then it was time to make red curry for dinner and play the 'Backpacker' card game!
