Up at 6 am to catch the 7am ferry to Naxos and this time on time if not 5 mins early and left on time, no hanging around, it was a quick shuffle on and we were off! As we left Amorgos we watched the sun rise which was beautiful. The journey went quite quick as soon as you reach Donoussa you are on Naxos coast line of the east traveling around the ports of the small Cyclades.
We called at Donoussa, koufonisi, Schoinousa, Irakleia and then Naxos at noon.
We saw Dolphins at one point which was fab. I was glad of a fleece I had popped in my hand luggage for part of the journey where it was very windy. We sat on top to view all the islands to get a feel of where we would like to visit next. On our approach to West coast of Naxos we traced with our map the coastline.
Excited but also sad to leave Amorgos we arrived at Naxos Town, so large and busy compared to Amorgos. Naxos car vision were there ready with the car greeting us off the ferry.
She was friendly gave us directions and a map to our accommodation and petrol station. We also called at a large supermarket and stocked up.
We found the rooms easily driving through the villages using main roads to Mikra Vigla, the road to the studios is a track but ok for the car. We had rented a self contained bungalow which was a lot smaller than expected. Though we had been spoiled at Amorgi with a large spacious room.
I must admit I am sat on small bay by our bungalow after un packing and lunch and feel like I am regretting booking Naxos. I hope this feeling goes away and we enjoy investigating as much as we have other Greek islands. Usually excited at arriving at new places and just can't put my finger on why not here.
The clouds have arrived, still warm though only feet entered the turquoise sea, I am looking out to sea at a small rocky inlet where a small church resides. Plaka beach is to my right in the distance.
Russ is fast asleep, I shall now either try to sleep or probably end up going for a wander!
So I snoozed then with the sun back out was hot and went for a swim, the sand is very deep,on this little bay and shelves not too badly. I grab my snorkel and investigate close by in sight of Russ who is reading. The water is clear, sandy bottom with large boulders and rocks. These I head for to find fish! When I crossed over the right of the bay where I could tip toe I saw a lime green fish I had not seen before. Fascinated by it I tried to capture it on camera. As I swam nearer to the beach I was treated to see an Octopus. These have to be one of my favourite creatures to snorkel with, I was thrilled. In such shallow water too. I watched him feed, stretching his tentacles, and changing shape and colour. A bright blue and yellow fish followed him as he swam and then clung to the rocks but then he noticed this big thing floating above him and he swam and hid under a rock. I stayed in the water hiding the other side for as long as I could but got too cold so had to leave him be.
Guess what, I like Naxos!!
We were out quickly and walked across the dunes to Mikra Vigla Taverna where we ate Moussaka, Naxion Fries, vine leaves and a Mythos plus .5 litre of water for €24. The sun was setting behind the head land of large funny shaped boulders but still the sky was pink with the waves of the turquoise water crashing on the beach.
We walked back along the road to the bungalow and are sat enjoying a cider and beer.
