Awake just in time to watch the sun rise over the hills of Rodopou, a beautiful sight to help me wake as sleep was very little for me last night.
I want to take a dip in the pool to cool down, Russ says no won’t be open, I say just don’t make a sound! It’s early there are rooms overlooking it so we are quiet. The cool water is so refreshing and works wonders in making me ready for our day ahead, Balos Lagoon a definite wow for me when you arrive by car in the morning to get the colours of the lagoon.
We have breakfast and then head off around 815. The hotel is mins away from the paying point, 1 euro each. The track is not too bad, no pot holes, just care if you are in a car for any fresh rocks on the track.
At the parking area, there are around 20 other cars already and a guy showing us where to park to maximise the space.
The walk down is around 20 mins and half way when the lagoon comes into sight, it is a truly beautiful sight. I notice the far left Taverna is no longer there and there is no through way of the sea as it’s all sand.
I choose our spot carefully as we may stay the whole day and I know when the boats come in there will be a swarm of people looking for spot of sand to lay on.
The lagoon is so beautiful, I do love it here. I had planned on walking around the island but we did nothing but relax. Russ has bought the guide books to read about it but there is not one mention in the DK Witness book which we find strange.
After a swim we settle down on our sun beds and read, I am very nearly finished reading Mr Mercedes, I’m not a Stephen King fan but Russ suggested this one and I have not been able to put it down.
Time went so quickly we decide to stay the day.
2 large boats come in and a couple of smaller ones. People watching at its best is now available as their passengers disembark to find that bit of sand. We only have one couple by bus and we look after their belongings when they take a swim. After around 2 hours the horns bellow out calling them to return on board.
Peace is restored in the lagoon…
I have had such a lazy day, I do no snorkelling, just sleep and read. A day I would normally find boring if there is no good snorkelling.
The trek back to the car is a bit of a climb, a trail of people taking it slowly, as you look back at the lagoon the colours have changed so much, no longer do you see the wonderful turquoise. A few people are just arriving which is a shame as the “wow” factor is slightly lost.
The car park is thinning but as we start the ride back, cars are parked on the track for quite some way. It takes around 30 mins to reach the hotel.
A fab chilled day at a stunning western point of Crete.
