Day 63. Coffee at the cafe by the old 1 Mile Jetty before we hopped aboard the Coffee Train which took us out to sea on the old 1880's jetty. Looked a bit rickety in places, lots old timbers and loose or missing railings. Once a busy working port with wool, beef, salt, whale and fish and other supplies. The museum near the cafe very interesting - a lifeboat from the German raider 'Kormoran' which sank the HMAS 'Sydney' in 1941 off Carnarvon with a loss of over 600 sailors. Then we looked around the old town centre - lots of old restored buildings and lovely avenues of palm trees and cafes. Drove down a back road to see many plantations of table grapes, bananas, mangoes, paw paw, tomatoes, beans, zucchini, chilli, grapefruit, onions, garlic and corn. Finally, a drive up to the OTC Satellite Earth Station and the Carnarvon Tracking Station - which played key roles in the early space industry including NASA's Gemini, Apollo and Skylab programs from 1964. The station also tracked Haley's Comet. Dinner tonight at the van of barbecued garlic butter banana prawns and salad. Warm 30 degrees but with only light winds.
