Day 88. Pancakes in our van for breakfast and then we set off to Esperance via a shortcut along Jerdacuttup Road. So many beautiful new wildflowers we just had to stop several times to explore and take photos. The sweet smell of the canola crops wafted through the air together with the wildflowers perfume. We arrived into Esperance on lunchtime and checked into the large shady Esperance Seafront CP with a beautiful view of the Esperance Bay and tanker jetty. Strolled along the Esplanade and new foreshore development with its beautiful gardens and parks. Then we drove along the 38km Great Ocean Drive to the lookout and stopped to view some of the most pristine white sandy beaches we have seen. From Observatory Point we could see several large Southern Right Whales playing and breaching in front of us! The plaque commemorating the 1792 visit of the French explorer ships Recherche and L'Esperance as well as the 1802 sailing of navigator Matthew Flinders to this 'Bay of Islands' were a great reminder of our past. We returned to the town centre via the wind farm and the incredibly white 'Pink Lake' to enjoy the very picturesque small town with its huge Norfolk Island pines and waterfront area with the large port operations nearby. Dinner home cooked nachos with a good Houghtons red wine. Warm 26 degrees, cloudy with a little drizzle falling tonight. Drove 240km.
