Day 83. We had some difficulty finding our way out of Busselton but eventually found our way onto the Vasse Highway going southeast. Stopped at quaint timber town of Nannup for morning coffee and then onto Pemberton arriving lunchtime. Drove through a magnificent stand of giant Karri trees in the Beedelup National Park. Checked into the local van park and then straight up to the Holy Smoke Gallery and Cafe for a tasty lunch of potato, bacon and leak soup around the fire. Beautiful timber furniture and other art work on display but kept our wallets in our pockets! Pemberton is a beautiful little timber town with quaint timber cottages and a working Karri timber mill, the largest hardwood mill in Australia, and once owned by the Bunning brothers. After lunch we boarded the historic Pemberton tramway for a 20km return trip along the old railway line to the Warren River trestle bridge. A really enjoyable trip across several old trestle bridges, streams, old forests and vineyards and a marron farm. Back in town we then drove out to the Gloucester Tree, a 61m tall Karri tree where Paul climbed halfway up and then wisely chickened out! A short drive out to Warren National Park we encountered the 75m Bicentenary Tree, another giant Karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor) set amongst a magnificent old Karri forest. Dinner tonight home cooked pizza and a red. Drove 200km, early rain showers, sunny afternoon 15 degrees.
